Prawns (raw, uncooked) 500g

Eating fish provides the body with essential vitamins and minerals required for good health.

Fish contains an oily substance called Omega-3. It is claimed that Omega-3 improves the circulation by clearing out the blood vessels.

The Omega-3 in fish, helps to keep the joins lubricated and stops them swelling up. Swelling of the joins is rheumatoid arthritis. Eating plenty of fish throughout a lifetime could prevent this disease. Anyone suffering with pain caused by this type of arthritis has limited choices in how to control this crippling pain. This inflammatory condition, often leads to inflammation in other parts of the body. Inflammation of the lungs is a prime example. In the lungs, the inflammation manifests itself in a number of ways; via chest pains, a lingering cough and shortness of breath. Prevention is always the best medication. Try buying and eating more fish.

Scientist have been looking to see if Omega-3 can lessen the symptoms of common depressions such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD disease) and post-natal depression. Could eating fish can make you happier? There's only one way to find out!

Vitamin A or Retinol also found in fish, helps to keep the eyesight clear. Vision can become blurred in old age due to retina damage.

Eating fish regularly might reduce another common lung complaint - Childhood Asthma. Find new and exciting ways to tempt children to eat more fish and see if this improves the condition. Childhood asthma is difficult to manage and interferes with everyday life, play-times, sporting activities, school in general and the sleeping patterns for both the sufferer and those managing the condition.

It is OK to eat fish whilst pregnant. Eat tiny amounts of shellfish and other fish known to be contaminated by mercury eg trout. It is also best to avoid eating raw fish during pregnancy, as an added safety measure.

Many fascinating scientific discoveries are linked to eating fish. Scientists tell us that the brain, is mainly made up of a fatty substance known as Omega-3. Omega 3 is present in most fish. Other sources of Omega 3 are limited. Plant oils like flaxseed, soybean and canola oil are likely substitutions for vegans and vegetarians looking to get their Omega-3. The trouble is, on their own, none of these oils are that appetising .

Keeping a healthy brain means that dementia, a deterioration of the brain, is less likely to happen. The foods eaten are only one factor in controlling this disease. The right foods, including fish, does play a significant role.

The Omega-3 in fish could improve the concentration skills of children. Some children think that they are allergic to fish, others claim that they do not like the taste or smell. In some cases this is true, in other cases it might be because they haven't been introduced to fish at a young enough age. Keep offering it up anyway. Children often change their habits.

There might be a link between low levels of Omega-3 and children who are having trouble learning to read, or sit still during learning times. In my experience If a child is struggling to sit still in the classroom or the kitchen table; it is most likely that the child is uninterested in what is being taught . Do not assume that it is a case of ADHD. ADHD is often mis-diagnosed. Very young children are not designed to sit still for long periods of time. Including more fish into a child's eating habits is a worthwhile experiment.

Other nutrients in fish are : iodine (thyroid function), selenium (a cancer fighting enzyme) zinc, potassium as well as Vitamin D.

Ripe Plantain

Of all the flavours in the Caribbean and other tropical places the plantain is the one food that is universally adored.

Around the world plantains are boiled, roasted or most commonly fried. Find a way to add one to the BBQ and you will not be disappointed. Fried sweet plantains are eaten on the side with dishes like stew peas and rice or ackee and saltfish.

The trick to making delicious fried plantain is to know which ones to choose. It’s all about how the skin looks; choose from firmer green plantain, to one with a sturdy yellowish tone, or go for one that looks more beaten up for a sweeter taste.

Plantain can be added to your diet as a replacement for the common potato. Not only are they far more delicious they are nutritionally more superior. They contain a richer source of fibre as well as vitamin A, C and B6, magnesium and potassium.

They do have a reputation for being HOT so if you are cooking for lightweights or very young children turn the heat down by first removing the seeds; or drop one whole into the pot for just a few minutes to add flavour without the heat. Keep a close eye on it make sure it does not burst.

Oxtail 1kg (chopped)

Choosing a less popular cut of meat is a blessing in disguise. It means that top quality meat can be purchased at a more affordable price. One example is oxtail.

This is the tail meat from cattle and typically a butcher will cut it into pieces in a neat way to avoid the central bone splintering and spoiling the meat. Once slow cooked this is considered one of the tastiest cut of beef.

Please note this product is chopped more finely than this picture shows.

Wild Ginger 190g

This wild ginger is grown in tropical climates and is imported to the UK from places like Uganda, Rwanda and Jamaica.

It is finer, fiery and more potent than other gingers.

Use it as a food ingredient in the ways you expect.

In tropical countries, where this type of ginger is grown it is also used in an additional way. It is washed and chewed skin on! Used in this way it is said to ward off chest complaints, coughs, colds and flu like symptoms. Ginger is efficient alternative choice due to its anti-inflammatory, anti viral and anti bacterial qualities.

Ginger can be boiled and used as a tea to limit nausea. If you don't have time to do this a ginger biscuit can also do the trick!

There is a possibility that ginger may thin the blood in the same way one everyday preparation (sold over the counter in lots of retail outlets) claims to do. Both ginger and the other product contain salicylates. The salicylates found ginger is entirely natural. There are times when using chemical enhancers might not be possible. Childhood and pregnancy are examples of these times. Therefore, dealing with issues naturally should alleviate any concerns.
